Hampshire’s Trusted Builders for Over 45 Years

Delivering Exceptional New Builds, Commercial Projects & Listed Building Restorations

Our History

For over 45 years, we’ve been building high-quality homes, commercial spaces, and restoring heritage properties across Hampshire. With a reputation for craftsmanship that extends into Wiltshire, we’ve become the trusted choice for premium construction services.

1970’s

Back in 1977, brothers Gil and Phil Hutton set out with little more than a Morris Minor van, a solid work ethic, and a determination to build something great. We started out in London, tackling plumbing and heating for flat conversions, reinvesting everything we earned into the business. As we grew, we bought our first Austin Morris Marina van and a flatbed truck—big milestones for us at the time!

By 1978, we had a small team of five and were converting large houses into flats across South London. A year later, we took on something much bigger—our first full new-build home. It was a three-story house with a basement big enough for two full-size snooker tables and an indoor swimming pool. That project marked the moment we knew we weren’t just builders—we were craftsmen.

  • Started as a two-man operation with a Morris Minor van
  • Expanded into house conversions and small extensions across Hampshire

  • Built our first new home in 1979—a project that set the tone for the future

1980’s

The 80s were a turning point. We landed a contract with Strongs of Romsey Brewery to extend the kitchen at the Royal Oak in Charlton, which led to a long stretch of work for Whitbread, converting Brewers Fayre pubs across Hampshire and beyond. Before we knew it, we had 57 employees, a fleet of vans, a 7.5-tonne lorry, and specialist site equipment.

This was also the decade we started working with major breweries like Marston’s and Bass. By the mid-80s, we’d moved into our own office and set up a joinery workshop—another big step in growing the business.

  • Expanded into commercial work, particularly pubs and breweries
  • Grew to a 57-strong workforce with a full fleet of site vehicles
  • Set up our own offices and joinery workshop to support larger projects

1990’s

By the 90s, we were well-established, and the projects just kept getting bigger and more complex. One of the standout jobs of the decade was a full-scale restoration of a Grade II* listed mansion and its surrounding estate cottages. It was a massive undertaking, valued at over £1.8 million, and really put our heritage expertise to the test.

Alongside that, we continued taking on listed barns, high-end residential projects, and industrial units. This was the decade that cemented our reputation for craftsmanship, attention to detail, and reliability.

  • Took on large-scale heritage projects, including a Grade II* mansion restoration
  • Strengthened our expertise in high-end residential and industrial builds
  • Became known for our precision, reliability, and ability to handle complex work

2000’s

As the new millennium rolled in, we took on bigger commercial projects, including a three-story office building in Salisbury city centre, which also involved restoring an attached listed building.

During this time, we worked with household names like Twinings and Stannah, as well as tackling unique residential projects, including a house that spanned a river. From thatched cottages to fire-damaged restorations, we became the go-to team for complex, high-spec builds across Hampshire.

  • Completed a major office and listed building refurbishment in Salisbury
  • Worked with leading brands like Twinings and Stannah
  • Built unique homes, including a house spanning a river

2010’s

The 2010s saw us branch further into commercial and retail developments. We built an entire retail park, which included a gym, a petrol station, and a Costa Coffee drive-thru, alongside other units. A standout project from this era was constructing a large foundry for MRT Casting, while also refurbishing their existing facility.

At the same time, we remained committed to bespoke, high-quality builds, completing oak-framed structures, including a village hall and multiple private residences. Whether it was a commercial project or a heritage restoration, our focus never wavered—delivering top-tier craftsmanship with a team that genuinely cares.

  • Delivered large-scale commercial projects, including a retail park and foundry
  • Built bespoke oak-framed structures, including a village hall
  • Maintained our reputation for quality craftsmanship in both modern and heritage projects

What Our Hampshire Clients Say

“We have worked with Hutton Andover on two major projects over the past few years to redevelop old industrial buildings on our sites into modern manufacturing facilities. The Hutton team has been involved from the very start of these projects, working with us and our architects to develop practical and cost-effective solutions. During the construction phases, they have managed the projects on time and on budget, despite the very challenging timescales we have set.”

“The quality of the finished buildings is a testament to Hutton’s team of skilled trades, their attention to detail, and their close collaboration with us and all of the other contractors involved in the projects.”
